No Day editorial for MLK Day disappointing

I cannot say whether the absence of a Day editorial devoted to racial injustice/civil rights on "Martin Luther King Day" bothered anyone other than me, but I can say it was conspicuously unusual. So much so, that I called The Day's editorial page editor, asking why.

His explanation I found reasonable, but disappointing.

Admittedly and unabashedly a leftist, I cannot say The Day is a lefty fave. But I can and herein do offer it some credible Wiki stuff to tuck away for next year. To wit: The federal petition for a MLK Day was the largest in favor of an issue in U.S. history; only two other figures, Washington and Columbus, have national U.S. holidays honoring them.

A former mainstream journalist, I get that hackneyed stuff runs its course as time goes by, that a news publisher's budget directs content, is what it is.

But no Day MLK editorial on MLK Day ain't right by my lights. The Day editorial page of Jan. 15 brought to my mind Jesse Helms more than MLK, I'm sad to say.

Editor's note: Monday's opinion page does not feature a house editorial, but on the King holiday it did include two commentaries referencing Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
