Concerned that federal cuts will prove detrimental to Long Island Sound

As a student at Waterford High School, I was researching contemporary issues in the United States for Civics. I chose climate change that was happening locally. Climate change  and related environmental issues are a rising problem in modern society, impacting the sea levels of Long Island Sound.

As the world gets warmer the sea level of the Sound is increasing as well. We are trying our best to lessen the effects on climate change on the Sound with an environmental program that is funded by the federal government and the anti-pollution regulation put on many industries. It was all we had to help with preventing a drastic increase of sea level on the Sound.

But back in 2017, on June 1, President Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement and also has proposed a cut of 23 percent out of the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget for 2019. This is a problem because Trump’s decision will drastically show how climate change is affecting the Long Island Sound since a large percentage of federal funding from the EPA is cut and we won't be able to suppress the impacts of climate change on the Sound as well as before.
