Big East move won't place UConn among state university elites

Not too long ago the University of Connecticut touted itself as a flagship state university. It wanted to emulate schools like Michigan, Cal, Florida and Ohio State. Entrance to a Power 5 Athletic conference was important.
That did not happen.
Instead, as a fallback, they entered the American Athletic Conference. Now they have re-entered the Big East, a conference comprised largely of small Catholic schools. I feel this will hurt UConn academically and athletically. The move was done on a purely economic motive. It will damage the school in the long run, inhibiting efforts to lift its reputation.
