New London walking beats
I would like to comment on the article that appeared in the print edition on July 21, “From the Bronx to New London: Why can’t we do it like they do?,” by Mike DiMauro.
I could not agree more with his opinion: walking beats should be reestablished in downtown New London.
As a former police officer in New London for eight years, working mostly at night and weekends, I usually would have a walking beat. I thought the police presence was a tremendous asset to maintain more comfort and is an understandable deterrent to crime.
In my opinion, safety anywhere, anytime is the core of our lives. New London should find a way to support this.
Sailfest’s recent success perhaps said it all. They found a way. To understand the presence of law enforcement is a must.
