    Jordan Freeman a hero

The Battle of Groton Heights took place Sept. 6, 1781, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Ledyard. By his side was his freed servant, Jordan Freeman, who vowed to fight alongside him. It was he who speared and killed the leader of the attackers, Major Montgomery, as he scaled the walls of the fort.

A bronze plaque overlooks the battlefield, with the legend “The Death of Major Montgomery while Leading the British Attack on the Fort at this Point. Sept 6, 1781.” Clearly depicted, but unidentified, is the figure of Jordan Freeman.

Jordan Freeman has long been recognized as a local hero; descendants of his family still live in the area. The Friends of Fort Griswold believe it is time that he is recognized for his role. With a generous grant The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut, a stone has been installed in the Fort honoring Jordan Freeman for his role in the American War for Independence.

His marker will be dedicated on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. inside Fort Griswold, prior to the Commemoration of the Anniversary of the Battle of Groton Heights. Please join us to honor the dead and celebrate a life.
