Will you feel safer when New London completes the $4 million roundabout at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Chester Street?

It will once again allow traffic traveling south on Jefferson Avenue unimpeded traffic flow making a right turn on Chester Street, while making drivers heading north dodge the unrelenting traffic heading to Waterford to access Chester Street.

Having lived near this intersection for 20 years and have talked to the mayor, in the last six months the arrow for southbound traffic was removed and replaced with a red light and an arrow given to northbound traffic to make the turn onto Chester Street. A roundabout will, once again, establish a traffic pattern that is unforgiving for northbound traffic.

At $4 million you would think Waterford would be paying for this exceptional access to their town.

The mayor in the conversation with me expressed a concern for safety. I believe that traveling north on Jefferson Avenue will once again be a crapshoot making a left onto Chester Street after this roundabout.
