    The facts about Ledyard plant

Sunday’s article, “Smaller dredging plant plans discussed in Ledyard,” (Nov. 20), contained some factual errors and left out key details. First, the dredging spoils would be brought in by barge and removed from the site by truck or rail, not “brought in by truck or rail” as stated in the story. This operation will add traffic to the Thames River and create the risk of spoils being spilled when transferred to land. Second, the previous truck estimate was 500 trucks/day for 24/7 operation, not 250 as stated. Though 100 trucks/day for 10-hour/day operation sounds better, the impact on traffic between 7 a.m.–5 p.m. would be about the same: 100 trucks = 200 trips (in/out) or about one every three minutes entering or exiting the plant. Third, the traffic study did not report “that 85% of the traffic on the highway go at speeds around 62 mph.” This misrepresentation came from Cashman’s slides. The study actually reported the 85th percentile speed was 61 mph - 85% of the traffic travels up to 61 mph. Your responsibility is to provide accurate information so the public can make informed decisions. Please make it a point to do so.
