    Roundabouts not pedestrian friendly

After reading the recent editorial, “Improving safety in a roundabout way,” (Nov. 21), it is important to highlight a few concerns that were brought up at the public information meeting on Nov. 10 that could have been more clearly presented in this editorial.

The primary concerns voiced were specific to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The example referred to in the editorial regarding safety is the roundabout at Routes 82 and 85 in Salem. However, as drivers who frequently use the Salem roundabout, we can confidently state that there are very few cyclists and no pedestrians who frequent this roundabout. So, not a good comparison.

At the Williams/Broad intersection there are a high number of pedestrians and cyclists throughout the day, including numerous children, considering Jennings, Bennie Dover, and RMMS schools nearby. Even with crosswalks, the roundabout may be a more dangerous area to cross than the present arrangement. The recommendation was made at the meeting that a crossing button with flashing lights be added to the crosswalks planned, so that pedestrians, especially children, will be able to cross more safely. We look forward to this being addressed as part of the plan in future public information meetings.
