What brings a veteran to tears?

November 11, Veterans Day, was a crisp clear morning and Chester Veterans and community groups were organizing for a parade and ceremony on the same place the ceremonies have taken place since 1939. American Legion Post 97 members worked tirelessly to ensure the two new granite wings would be added by Veterans Day. They were, and it was announced with pride. because “We cannot forget.” A history lesson on wars and its affects on Chester residents was listened to intently by all in attendance at Chester Memorial Park, prayers were shared, the National Anthem and Start Spangled Banner were sung, the flag was raised, the rifles were discharged three times, Taps was played and there couldn’t have been anyone not affected by what was presented.

People mingled, found their relatives’ names in granite, and disbursed to enjoy the rest of their day. Within two hours, the two new granite wings had been defaced, but American Legion Post 97 wasn’t informed until Monday after some incorrect attempts were made to clean up the markings over the weekend. This is what brings veterans to tears.
