Fate of New London’s iconic skyline

The hush that permeated New London after the crumbling of the First Congregational Church was a testament to what meaningful, beautiful architecture means to the city. As we watch heavy equipment remove the rubble from the site, I turn an eye to the new buildings being constructed in arrogant defiance to New London’s historic and beautiful skyline.

This is a horrible moment on which the New London zoning committee, mayor, city council and residents must meditate. We must agree that New London’s skyline is worth passing up the easy dollar for a precious one. The next highest bidder is not necessarily the right bidder. Sparing readers my ideas of what ought to go where, I urge them to press the powers that be to scrutinize new building projects and demand a standard for what becomes of our iconic skyline. What will New Londoners let stand in our historic city?
