Outdated Route 2 in North Stonington needs attention

I was pleased to read in The Day (March 6) article by Carrie Czerwinski, “Limited no-wake zone for Pawcatuck River,” that Rep. Greg Howard, R-Stonington, has proposed a bill to create a limited no-wake zone on a portion of the Pawcatuck River. This is an important safety and environmental issue.

Now, Rep. Howard and Sen. Heather Somers, R-Groton, need to get to work on a much bigger local safety issue: getting North Stonington's section of Route 2 into the 21st century and ready for a very large increase in year-round 24/7 traffic when the Great Wolf Lodge opens this year.

Too many sections of Route 2 in North Stonington have no shoulders, lack modern caution signage and have completely worn-out line paint. There have been several fatalities and crashes near the intersection of Cossaduck Hill Road, and speeding and motorcycle racing is a constant. Rep. Howard and Sen. Somers, “We need your help to make this crucial road safer and quieter.”
