I have been a reader of The Day for years. For most of that time, the paper provided thorough coverage of the local news and events of southeastern Connecticut. Today, The Day is now a mere shadow of itself. At $2 per copy daily and $4 on Sunday, The Day’s content has dwindled to the level where the cost of the paper exceeds its value.

As a result of a change in culture, where social media has become the preferred source of news for many, the paper has downsized content. The Sunday edition provides barely enough news to wrap the garbage, while on Monday, if the edition got any thinner, it would be page-less. The Day is contributing to its demise by giving into the pressure of social media instead of competing to inform its readers. Southeastern Connecticut is a growing region, driven by a large military presence, a growing submarine construction business, the largest casino industry in the northeast and an ever-expanding social environment.

With that opportunity, it’s unfortunate that today’s Day minimizes news content, compared to the coverage it once provided. The Day is struggling to uphold the vision of its founder, Theodore Bodenwein, to be the region’s information company!
