Let the voters know when there’s a vote

I would like to comment on the article from The Day, May 2, “Stonington OK’s budget with $7.6M in capital improvements, no tax increase,” by Carrie Czerwinski. There was only a 3% turnout for this vote. This is deplorable and preventable. While I appreciate that people are willing to serve in local government positions, they must find a better way to inform the public when there is to be a vote.

When I phoned Town Hall, I was told that they understood that few people voted because there was to be no increase in the budget. On the contrary, I believe after talking with many residents that many had no knowledge that there was to be a vote. I asked that in the future the town should post a few signs at strategic intersections in town, so that citizens without Facebook or other media will be aware of the vote. I would be happy to do this for them.

Alternatively, they could contact key persons in different neighborhoods, so that they could pass on the information. Or, possibly they could do a robocall. As it is, we cannot sustain a democracy if the public doesn't even know there is to be a vote.
