Dubious delay in South Broad Street sidewalk project

In 2023, Connecticut approved and began construction of a contiguous sidewalk, on the south side of South Broad Street, from the Stonington High School east to Mayflower Avenue. The project cost was reported as $1.3 million and to be completed in 2023. It was to provide a safe and complete sidewalk for those who might have to walk to grocery stores or pharmacies. It has not yet been completed.

In January 2024, state and local elected officials appeared before the Stonington Men’s Club, as they do annually. They were asked about the status of this sidewalk project. State Sen. Heather Somers responded that they had run into problems on properties opposite the Pawcatuck Shopping Center, because the project plans violated state requirements. They were working to solve those problems and would complete the sidewalk in the spring of 2024. Spring 2024 is over. No further work has been done to complete the sidewalk.

There is still no safe way for people to walk the proposed distance safely and stay out of the road. I have had no response from Somers to my inquiry on this subject.
