    Tips for safer driving

I live in Hamburg, and Route 156 has become truly dangerous. From the Lyme Town Hall to the I-95 entrance, Route 156 has blind curves and no shoulders and a lot of deer crossings; I have seen two dead deer on the road recently. It is heavily traveled, including by cyclists, and almost everyone drives well over the speed limit. The worst spot is the steep little hill at the south end of Hamburg village, which has blind road entrances and driveways at both top and bottom.

The 30 mile-per-hour speed limit is mostly ignored. There was a serious accident there last week. The DOT could help with more warning signage, but speed cameras would be even better. Yes, they would catch a lot of locals at first, but hefty fines could change habits. I’d like to see towns also use speed cameras on their own roads. It’s time to change the driving mindset and think first about allowing enough time to get where you’re going at the speed limit, think about other drivers and watch out for deer and bicycles.
