Around the region

• Ledyard High School graduate Geralson Withrow became the first Newbury College athlete to win both the Nighthawks Male Rookie of the Year and Male Nighthawk of the Year awards. Withrow competes in both cross country and track at Newbury.

"I wasn't really expecting it go to that way but it was very exciting," Withrow said in a release. "Coming from my background and being someone who didn't expect to be in college, I always just wanted to be a great runner and it's amazing to see everything coming together when you put in the work."

Withrow holds the school's indoor records in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters. He also set the outdoor record for the 1,500 and 5,000 meters this spring. Last fall, he was received the NECC cross country rookie of the year honor and also made the All-NECC first team.

• Mount Ida junior attack Kyle Ton, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, earned the Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse player of the week for the second time this season. Ton had 12 goals and five assists in three games for the Mustangs, becoming the program's 21st member of the 100 point club. He finished the season ranked second in the league in goals (42) and points (63) and also added 21 assists.

• Also at Mount Ida, junior Brooke Scahill of Gales Ferry chipped in seven goals and five assists in her women's lacrosse team's 19-8 win over Norwich in the GNAC quarterfinal round on Saturday. Her scoring output enabled her to reach the 100-point mark in a season, joining teammate Alyssa Kelly as the only members of the exclusive club. She was named the GNAC player of the week. Scahill has 62 goals and 42 assists for 104 points this season. She ranks third nationally in Division III in free position goals per game at 2.06. She's 14th nationally in points per game at 6.5.

• Montville's Abby McAdams, a senior member of the WPI women's track team, was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference all-academic team for the second time. She helped WPI place second at the NEWMAC Championship on April 28, placing eighth in the javelin with a throw of 95 feet, 5 inches.

• At Springfield College, sophomore Evan Tryon, an East Lyme graduate from New London, earned All-NEWMAC academic honors for men's track. He's an applied exercise science major.

• At Wheaton College, East Lyme's Nick Hotary was named to the All-NEWMAC academic team for men's tennis.

• Goalie Taylor Huta, a sophomore from Waterford, made seven saves in the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team's 18-6 win over Salem State on Friday.

• Fitch graduate Laura Krick played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in her first season as a member of the Salve Regina women's tennis team.

• Junior attack Vanessa Vurno, an East Lyme graduate, helped the Elms College women's lacrosse team capture the New England Collegiate Conference regular season title and earn the top seed in the league tournament. Vurno ranks first in the conference in assists (23), second in points (63) and fourth in goals (40).

• Waterford's Sara Buscetto leads the Southern Connecticut State University softball team in hits (39), runs scored (29), RBI (20) and stolen bases (13). Fitch graduate Jayden Delaporta, a freshman first baseman, has appeared in 41 games, starting 39, and has seven doubles and 13 RBI. Emily Borysewicz, a freshman catcher from Waterford, has played in 12 games.

• Junior midfielder Michelina Pinto of Groton scored a career-high six goals for the Eastern Connecticut women's lacrosse team in a 16-14 win over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday. Pinto leads the Warriors (10-6), who received the third seed in the Little East Conference tournament, in goals (34) and points (47) and also has 13 assists.

Mariners riding a wave

• The Mitchell College men's lacrosse duo of Jesse McKeever and Marcel Quinlan made the NECC all-tournament team. The Mariners lost by one goal to Becker College in the semifinals.

• The women's lacrosse team qualified for the NECC tournament as the sixth seed. The Mariners (4-8) will visit No. 3 Southern Vermont (6-8) in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. The two teams played on Saturday in the regular season finale, with Mitchell dropping a 20-8 decision. Junior Kate McCormack (32 goals, 7 assists), junior Francesca Pinard (20 goals, 6 assists) and freshman Lindsey Fairbank (20 goals, 4 assists) power the Mitchell attack.

Tracking the Bears

• The Coast Guard Academy men's lacrosse team heads into its first NEWMAC tournament appearance with junior goalie Trey Johnson enjoying a terrific season. Johnson earned conference defensive player of the week honors for the third time this season after making 15 saves in an 8-6 win over Babson Saturday that secured the program's a share of the regular season title for the first time. Johnson ranks first in the conference with a sparkling 6.33 goals-against average and owns a career-high and conference-leading 12 wins.

Top-seeded Coast Guard (13-3) hosts fourth-seeded MIT (8-7) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in tournament semifinal action at Cadet Memorial Field in New London. The Bears won the regular season meeting 7-2 on April 4.

• The Bears swept the NEWMAC weekly baseball awards, as senior Alex Murdoch was named athlete of the week and junior Walter Harris pitcher of the week. Murdoch had a career-best five hits in the regular-season finale win over Emerson College on Saturday, giving him 100 for his career. He also had three RBI and scored three runs in a 20-0 rout. He lifted his final batting average to .306. Harris earned the win against Emerson, allowing one hit in five innings for the Bears, who finished 11-18 overall, 4-13 in the conference.

• In women's lacrosse, the Bears will compete in the NEWMAC tournament for the first time, visiting No. 4 Wheaton College in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday. The teams met in the regular-season finale, with Wheaton rallying for a 12-11 win on Saturday.

Camel highlights

• The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team finished with the program's highest win total since 2013, going 10-6 overall. The Camels also went 5-5 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels saw their 2018 season end with a 10-4 loss at Williams Saturday in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The future looks bright, as 30 players are expected to return next season including their top three scorers — junior P.J. Kelleher (24 goals, 42 assists), junior Jordan Foster (37 goals, 8 assists) and sophomore Maxx Trotsky (28 goals, 7 assists).
