Local college roundup: Coast Guard women win opener in double overtime
New London — Freshman Brielle Pearce made her debut with the Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team count Saturday, scoring in the second overtime period to lead the Bears to a 1-0 season-opening win over Fredonia State.
Coast Guard opened the season with a win for the first time since 2015. Freshman goalie Katharina Commins made two saves to earn the shutout.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Pearce slipped behind the Fredonia State defense rifling a shot past Owczarzak at 1:02.59 for the game winner.
Fredonia State is 0-2.
In other games:
• Mitchell goalkeeper Drew Johndrow stopped 10 shots in a 2-0 loss to Thomas College of Maine. Lindsey Fairbank took both shots for the Mariners (0-2).
Volleyball
• Mitchell dropped 3-0 matches to Eastern Connecticut State University (25-13, 25-9, 25-10) and Nichols College (25-20, 25-14, 25-16) in Willimantic. Against ECSU, Courtney Cappabianca paced the Mariners (0-2) with four kills and Cameron Childs finished with 13 assists and six digs in her collegiate debut. In the second match, Griswold High graduate Shyla Phillips-Krick finished with a match-high 15 digs for Mitchell.
• Coast Guard rallied for a 3-2 win over host St. Lawrence before falling 3-0 to Geneseo. The Bears (3-1) dropped the first two sets to the Saints before winning the last three 25-19, 25-22 and 15-9.
Men's soccer
• Sophomore Noa Pagatpatan scored his first collegiate goal for Coast Guard in a 1-1 tie with Southern Maine. Quintin Parsons and Dan Taglianetti recorded assists for the Bears (0-1-1), who took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
