    I Believe in Light

What does it mean to say we believe in light? What is "light" anyway?

Is it hope, is it goodness, or is it faith in the spark within each of us that knows and feels respect for all of humanity? Probably all of the above. People all over the world are reaching out for something to believe in. Is it the politicians we can believe in? Is it the religions of the world? Is there really one way of thinking that will satisfy all, or is it simply looking into the eyes of that person closest to you, seeing their soul, and realizing that you are connected to another human being, therefore not alone in your struggles?

Light is that which opens our minds to possibilities, that which nourishes us, impelling us to move outside of ourselves. Light inspires, and inspiration comes in many forms; think of the child who smiles at you, bringing a grin to your face, an exquisite sunset, making you breathe deeper in appreciation for beauty, random thoughts of kindness, a jolt of creativity that blossoms into reality. The "light of day" helps us to face difficulties and gain strength, the "light of truth" carries us to resolve old conflicts, the "light of love" heals every little thing that has been hiding. When someone has light in their countenance, we can see it as well as feel it. Light elevates lifts and lets the cobwebs be seen, so we can clean house. Light is what we hope for when trying to solve a problem; it broadens our perspective.

So why is it important to believe in light? Because without it, darkness would prevail and life would seem hopeless. In my experience as a healer, I have had the honor of witnessing many people shed the shadows of the past, let go of the heavy weight they've been carrying and finally feel freedom. Think about how much mental, emotional energy it takes to keep a secret! Light brings awareness of those things that have been hiding, and once finally released, leaves room for growth and change.

Watching the light of understanding turn on in someone's head, feeling light warm a heart that had once been shut down, and hearing the light of hope in a voice is miraculous. That is light in real time. In this world of duality, the option is ours. This must be a choice for which we take full responsibility. What do you want to focus on, darkness or light? One engenders fear, guilt, self doubt, and conflict, and the other brings feelings of integrity, peace, kindness, and goodness.

The last time I stayed up all night to watch a meteor shower, I decided to wait for the sunrise before making my way back to bed. I am a rational person, knowing full well that the daylight would come, but somewhere within me, as I waited and waited and waited, I began to doubt. What if the sun didn't rise? What if somehow I missed it? What if I was looking in the wrong direction? I watched as the light from the eastern sky chased the darkness away, long before the sun made its entrance. Finally, it came, peeking its way above the horizon and I breathed a sigh of relief. Now I could go home, and go to sleep, still believing in light.
