Help us shape our election coverage

What questions would you like The Day news and opinion staff to ask candidates leading up to Election Day?

We’re planning our election coverage — yes, summer is still in full swing, but these things take time — and we want you to tell us what’s important to know before stepping into a voting booth on Nov. 8 and begin filling out bubbles.

We’ve created an email, election22@theday.com, that you can use to communicate with us, and an online form that you can fill out, to tell us what issues you’d like us to ask the candidates about. You can also email us at tips@theday.com to reach us about elections or any other news.

Our coverage this year will include articles, videos, a debate or two, endorsements and, we predict, an upswing in carefully crafted letters to the editor and well-reasoned reader comments.

We’ve assigned reporters to cover all of the statehouse races in New London County, along with the race for U.S. Representative for the Second District.

Elections are an all-hands-on-deck effort for reporting staff, even those who don’t normally cover politics. We’ll be conducting video interviews of candidates, writing profiles and following the campaigns.

On September 13 and 14, we’re holding candidate open houses to tell them about the newsroom’s coverage plans, editorial page policies on letters to the editor and candidate endorsements, and advertising opportunities. Candidates who did not receive an invitation can email me at k.florin@theday.com for details.

We’re planning at least one debate, and possibly more, in partnership with The Garde Arts Center, League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut and WFSB.

On Oct. 12 at 7 p.m ., Congressman Joe Courtney has agreed to debate Mike France and any other qualified candidates. Executive Editor Tim Cotter, will be moderating the debate, and we’ll have a panel of journalists from The Day and other news outlets.

Our statehouse reporter, Sten Spinella, has been corresponding with a group of readers about the governor’s race. If you’d like to be added to that group, email him at s.spinella@theday.com.

Karen Florin is The Day’s engagement editor. She can be reached at k.florin@theday.com or (860) 701-4217.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
