Subtlety is overrated, and the recession is far behind us - at least if you take the fashion industry's word for it. Fall collections highlighted a luxe look, anchored by show-stopping dresses, sculpted jackets and ornate jewelry. At design house Balmain, for example, Christophe Decarnin looked to the elegant extragavance of Louis XIV, piling on embroidery, sequins and gilded accents.
From the artful flourishes of silk brocade to the lush fluidity of draped velvet, these pieces scream "expensive." But a few can be had for a song.
