Day cameras to capture Charles W. Morgan unveiling
Mystic — The Mystic Seaport’s historic whaling ship Charles W. Morgan will move 210 feet next week, the farthest it has moved in nearly five years, when shipyard workers roll the 300-ton vessel from the spot it’s held since November 2008 onto the lift dock. On July 21, the ship will be relaunched in the Mystic River.
The Day will publish a timelapse video on theday.com this week upon the removal of the construction “shed,” which has enabled crews to continue work on the ship during bad weather. Eight weeks ago, Day chief photographer Sean D. Elliot placed a camera in the attic of the shipyard’s paint shop. The camera has captured one image every five minutes since May 1. The resulting video will show the unveiling of the ship, which has been hidden behind wood and plastic for nearly two years.
