    Churches combine for 12-hour prayer

New London - In an effort to foster unity through religion, 10 New London churches will come together this week for a special 12-hour prayer service.

The prayer service, entitled "One," will be a way for believers of all Christian denominations to come together to embrace their common beliefs, according to event organizers.

One of the organizers, Lorraine Spence, said the service will be a learning experience that will allow believers to pray together regardless of cultural and other differences.

"I focused on getting a cross-section of the churches in the city," she said. "I wanted it to be multicultural."

Spence added that she hoped the prayer service would help bring more unity to the Christian churches in the area.

"The purpose is to show unity in the church," she said. "They are all representing the same God."

The prayer service will be held from 6 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday at The Oasis of Restoration at 138 Garfield Avenue in New London. A clergy member from each of the churches involved will officiate one hour of the service.

Each hour, the prayers will focus on something different, with hours dedicated to blessing children, anointing those diagnosed with cancer and a sunrise healing service.

The public is invited to attend the event.
