Flags to be given out for Marine mourners

Flags will be provided at 5 p.m. Monday at the Ocean State Job Lot off Exit 85 of Interstate 395 for mourners planning to line the route that U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Tyler Griffin's hearse will take through the center of Voluntown and into the Pachaug section of Griswold.

Griffin, 19, of Voluntown, was killed on April 1 in combat on Afghanistan's Helmani province, according to the Department of Defense. The last time Voluntown lost a resident serving in the U.S. armed forces was the late 1960s.

Cardinal Honda in Groton has provided four large flags to be placed along the route, and 200 flags are available for bystanders. Anyone wishing to donate flags to ensure that everyone along the route will have one can drop it off at Grossman's Seafood in Groton, or bring it to the parking lot Monday evening.
