    Dean's List for Spring Semester 2010

    The following Chester, Deep River, and Essex residents were named to the dean's, presidents', and/or merit lists at their respective colleges and universities.

    • Roger Williams University: Taryn Roussel of Ivoryton, a junior marketing major in the Gabelli School of Business. Roussell was also inducted into Delta Sigma Pi, a professional fraternity for men and women pursuing business careers, and is a member of the varsity women's soccer team.

    Academic and Extracurricular Achievements

    Michael Breault of Ivoryton was one of eight seniors at Xavier High School to be installed as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist at Xavier's Feast of All Saints Liturgy. Breault and the other students were called before the assembly of the entire school and commissioned by Father Greg Galvin, Norwich diocesan vocation director, who presided at the liturgy. The students will have the responsibility of distributing communion during school liturgies. All are active in Xavier's campus ministry program. Breault was also one of seven seniors at Xavier to be named a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

    Alexis Egidio, '12; Katherine Lee, '11; and Christine Smith, '12, all students at Sacred Heart Academy, were inducted into the school's new chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society. Mu Alpha Theta is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. Mu Alpha Theta achieves these goals by: providing a method for schools to recognize and encourage those students who enjoy and excel in math; organizing a national convention for teachers and students to participate in math-related events; rewarding outstanding extracurricular math achievement by offering special awards to both students and faculty advisors; and providing mathematics competitions at their schools to participating members.

    Shawna Jameson, the daughter of Gail Jameson of Chester, has been appointed to the student leadership organization cadre within the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Randolph-Macon Academy (RMA). Jameson, a senior at R-MA, received the rank of master sergeant and will perform the duties assigned to the music library officer. Only students with records of strong academics and leadership abilities are eligible for the academy's cadet officer and non-commissioned officer ranks.

    Nichol Stevens of Chester, the daughter of Cindy and Gary Stevens, was recently awarded the Meghan Strathman, '03, Memorial Scholarship at Salve Regina University. Nichol is in her junior year at Salve and is a double major in elementary/special education.

    Andrew Kane, a 2009 graduate of Guilford College and a resident of Essex, is currently serving with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). NCCC is a 10-month, residential, team-based program in which teams of 18- to 24 year-olds travel the country and help improve communities. Kane's team is based in the Pacific region of NCCC in Sacramento, California. The team's first project was in Alpaugh, California, working with the Bureau of Land Management and Alpaugh Unified School District, restoring a wetland and tutoring kids in the CHOICES after-school program respectively. The team's second project was in Gresham, Oregon, working with Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. The team's third project was in North Highlands, California, where the team was split betweeen F.C. Joyce Elementary and Larchmont Elementary schools. Team members worked after school with the Boys & Girls Club, providing homework help and participating in leisure activities with the kids. The team's fourth project was a split project between New Harmony, Utah, and Canyonville, Oregon. In New Harmony, team members built fences, defined trails, built bridges, and created signs for the trails.
