    DEP to honor Pawcatuck man

Stonington - The state Department of Environmental Protection is scheduled to honor Pawcatuck resident John "Whit" Davis on Wednesday with the dedication of an oak tree and plaque on his Osbrook Point Farm.

DEP Commissioner Amey Marrella is scheduled to attend the 2:30 p.m. event along with State Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-Stonington, State Rep. Diana Urban, D-North Stonington, and First Selectman Ed Haberek.

Conservation Commission Chairman Stanton Simm said Davis is being honored for his 25 yeas of service on the inland wetlands and conservation commission, his preservation of his 260-acre farm with a conservation easement so it can never be developed as well as his donation of the farm's Continental marsh to the Avalonia Land Conservancy. The marsh supplied hay to the Continental army during the Revolutionary War.

In addition, he had led the effort to turn his family's 17th-century farmhouse into a museum. Davis is also a descendant of the Stantons, one of the town's founding families.

"I don't know anyone who's done more for conservation," Simm said.
