New Development Project Another Step in Creating a Medical Mecca in North Haven

On the heels of last month's news that Yale-New Haven Hospital plans to open a medical center in town, First Selectman Michael Freda announced at last week's Board of Selectmen meeting that another medical building may also soon come to North Haven.

Freda said he has been working with other developers over the past several weeks on a project that "will complement the Yale project." Both would be located in the Devine Street area. This newly proposed project would be located near the Crossroads building and Healthtrax.

According to the first selectman, the developers are not the only parties interested in seeing this project brought to completion; potential tenants are apparently eager to move in.

"I am working with doctors who want to be part of this," said Freda.

He called the project a "medical epicenter with future expansion opportunities." Medical professionals, such as cardiologists, gynecologists, orthopedic professionals, and primary care physicians are among those who could populate the building. Freda estimated that the medical center could bring between 125 and 150 professional jobs to North Haven.

Work with the town's Planning & Zoning Commission will likely begin over the next couple of months, noted Freda.

Last month, Freda explained that Yale's plan for 6 Devine Street is to create a medical center similar to the Yale-New Haven Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford. Expectations are that the site will include a radiology center, a full-service emergency room center, a geriatric center, and a pediatric center. According to Freda, Yale has set a target date of December 2011 for the new facility to open.

The center is expected to bring 200 white collar jobs to town, according to Freda.
