New London - Doctors at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital will provide free oral, head and neck cancer screenings from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The screenings will take place in the Community Cancer Center at the main hospital. Screenings are free, but appointments are required; call (860) 442-0711, extension 3409.

The screenings are being offered as part of Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week. Oral, head and neck cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world, affecting nearly 95,000 people per year in the United States.

Signs and symptoms could include lump or sore in mouth or throat, hoarseness or change in voice, swallowing problems and bleeding in the nose, mouth or throat.
