Police to conduct checkpoints in Stonington

Stonington — Between May 21 and June 3, the police department will conduct numerous checkpoints throughout the town to enforce seat belt laws and other driving violations.

The stepped up enforcement is part of the Annual Click It Or Ticket campaign that is conducted by police departments across the country to increase safety on the roads.

Stonington police are asking all motorists to do their part and buckle up while driving or riding in a vehicle.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 22,187 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2010 and 51 percent of them were not wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes. Among teenagers, that number jumps to 62 percent. NHTSA statistics show that in 2010, seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.
