    Amtrak reopens bridge

East Lyme — Amtrak reopened the new Niantic River Bridge Tuesday morning ahead of schedule.

The bridge was supposed to remain closed from Sunday night until Tuesday night for repairs. The structure compressed more than the mathematical models predicted it would. The lift span was too low and needed to be realigned.

Amtrak had said it would be able to open the old bridge during the repairs. But the old span malfunctioned over the weekend while crews were performing overhead wire work as part of the replacement project, Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said.

“Amtrak apologizes for the inconvenience caused by this incident,” Cole said in a statement.

Cole said all of the work associated with the realignment has been completed and Amtrak can maneuver the old and new spans upon request. The next significant operations in the channel are scheduled for November.
