New London — Police early this morning were still investigating a stabbing that occurred late Wednesday night at an apartment complex at 187 Huntington St.

A state police major crime squad was parked in the middle parking lot. Investigators could be seen bringing brown bags filled with evidence and placing it in the vehicle.

Yellow tape cordoned a row of apartments in the “D” section of the apartment complex.

The victim’s condition was not available, but fire department personnel on the scene Wednesday said the young, Hispanic male was severely injured. A source said the victim was stabbed six times in the chest and once in the abdomen.

Police at the scene this morning declined to comment on the incident. No further information was available.

The victim was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after the 10:30 p.m. incident and was then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

By 8:30 a.m. police had cleared the scene. Family and friends of the victim were sitting outside apartment D14. They declined to speak and asked that there “privacy be respected” at this time.

Witnesses said Wednesday that the stabbing occurred in apartment D14 of the complex. One witness said three men knocked on the door of the apartment and stabbed the victim when he opened the door.

A witness said the men fled on foot, running through the complex parking lot, which exits across the street from the Multicultural Magnet School.
