New London Green Party supports 2012-13 budget

New London — After examining the city’s budget, the New London Green Party has voted to support the 2012-13 budget and urge voters to approve both questions that will appear on the ballot Tuesday.

The questions are: Shall the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 budget of the City of New London be approved? Shall the tax rate of 27.22 mills for the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 for the City of New London, and the time when the same shall be due, be approved?

Among the reasons the Greens support the budget, which represents a 7.5 percent increase in taxes, is because it is only a 1 percent increase in spending and contains more realistic revenue projections than in the past, according to a statement released Thursday.

Party members said city officials are unable to further reduce fixed costs -- debt service and contractual obligations - that make up the majority of the budget. They also want to avoid further cuts in city services if further reductions are required.

The Green Party encourages the city to become more efficient and sustainable. Among the things it supports are efforts to pursue opportunities for locally generated clean energy, better land use and denser development, and to lobby for more PILOT funding from the state.
