DEEP to review permit request to divert water between East Lyme, New London

East Lyme– A permit application to divert water for the East Lyme - New London Regional Interconnection Project is under review by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The permit is another step in the project – for which East Lyme appropriated $10,971,000 – to transport water between the town and New London.

Under the Water Diversion Policy Act, Connecticut regulates water flow when more than 50,000 gallons of “waters of the state” are transported per day, said Doug Hoskins, analyst for the Inland Water Resources Division at DEEP.

DEEP must complete the review of the permit application by Oct. 20.

Hoskins said DEEP’s bureau of Water Protection and Land Reuse is in favor of the proposal, from what it has seen so far, but needs to review the particulars to make sure it is consistent with the permit’s conditions and specifications.
