Scientists to dye Bride Brook stream at Rocky Neck Beach Tuesday

East Lyme -- Scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency’s New England Regional Lab and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced today that they will conduct a dye tracing study on Tuesday in Bride Brook, which flows into coastal waters at Rocky Neck State Park Beach.

The team will inject dye into Bride Brook at approximately 11 a.m. and will monitor the ebb tide cycle until low tide. Portions of the beach at Rocky Neck may turn reddish in color for a brief time; however, the dye is not harmful to people or the ecosystem, the EPA said in a news release.

The method is being used to track the flow and dispersion of water in the estuary areas around the park.

DEEP will produce dispersion maps from Bride Brook into the immediate area of the Rocky Neck beach. Information from the dye study will be used to determine if Bride Brook has an impact on nearby beaches and shellfish beds.
