Police: Alcohol could have played a role in New London crash

New London – Alcohol may have been a factor in a Wednesday morning head-on crash that sent two people to the hospital, police said.

The vehicles hit around 10 a.m. at Vauxhall and Center streets, fire department Battalion Chief Marc A. Melanson said. Both drivers were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said.

The vehicles were traveling on Vauxhall when one swerved and hit the other head on, Melanson said. The female driver of one car had pulled herself from the wreckage and lay on a sidewalk when fire personnel arrived, Melanson said, while the male driver of the other car appeared more seriously injured.

Melanson said the roadway was closed for at least 40 minutes as personnel cleared the scene of the wrecked vehicles. The crash remains under investigation, Reichard said.
