Gas line replacement will start Monday in downtown Norwich

Norwich — Construction to replace gas lines on major downtown streets will begin Monday and will continue until winter forces the project to shut down for the winter, Norwich Public Utilities officials said Friday.

Construction will begin Monday on Broadway and will, and weather permitting, will continue on Main Street, Market Street, Courthouse Square and Water Street.

After the project closes down for the winter, work will resume in the spring.

Crews will also be paving the area of Broadway and Washington Street, where the gas main was replaced earlier this year. Only the section of road that was impacted by the construction will be paved.

Washington Street will be entirely resurfaced at a later date.

"Our goal is to replace underground utility pipes as needed, prior to street repaving," said Chris LaRose, NPU assistant general manager. "We work closely with public works in an effort to coordinate our utility system maintenance requirements with their paving schedule to avoid digging up a newly paved road."

Some traffic delays should be expected during construction.

Anyone with concerns or questions about this work should contact Norwich Public Utilities at (860) 887-2555, or send an email to communitymatters@npumail.com.
