RESPITE CENTERS

EAST LYME

Regional Shelter: East Lyme Community Center at 37 Society Road. "The regional shelter serving Montville, Waterford, New London, East Lyme, Lyme, Old Lyme is still in operation and a decision will be made tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon on whether to continue," East Lyme Emergency Management Director Dick Morris said.

Showers: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7-10 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. at the high school on Chesterfield Road.

School: Canceled Friday. SATs will take place on Saturday as scheduled. The CIAC Diving Tournament has been rescheduled for Monday at East Lyme High School. The CIAC Volleyball Tournament at East Lyme High School will take place as scheduled, the schools' website states.

Transfer station: Residents may bring demolition and trash for free.

Brush and tree limbs: May be deposited at Veterans Field or there will be curbside pickup.

Safety: Avoid downed trees and wires, make sure electronics are off as power is restored, follow proper procedures for generators, and use caution when driving, urges First Selectman Paul Formica.

Water Safety: Town pump stations and wells are stable, and water is safe to drink, say town officials. Residents with concerns about their wells should contact the Ledge Light Health District, (860) 448-4882.

Water for livestock: Call Flanders Fire Department at (860) 739-6968 for water delivery.

Disaster assistance request: Register at 1-800-621-FEMA or www.disasterassistance.gov.

GROTON

The Groton Senior Center at 102 Newtown Road remains open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. all weekend as a respire center with showers and charging for electronic devices. It is also an American Red Cross regional emergency shelter for local residents from Groton, Stonington, North Stonington and Ledyard. The regional shelter will remain open Saturday and Sunday night.

The Senior Center also will be the distribution site for Ready To Eat Meals and water.

Groton Emergency Management Director Joseph Sastre said he expects the Federal Emergency Management Agency will set up a Disaster Recovery Center at the Groton Senior Center in the days to come. A center was set up in the wake of last year's Tropical Storm Irene for people to make claims for individual assistance beyond what their insurance will cover.

If people anticipate they would need to make a claim for federal assistance, they need to register with the federal government online or call to create a file number. To register, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The number is 1-800-462-7585 for people with speech or hearing disabilities. Lines are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Online registration is available at www.disasterassistance.gov.

LEDYARD

STONINGTON

Town Hall: open

The Stonington Town Clerk's Office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for voters to obtain absentee ballots.

Showers: The Ocean Community YMCA branches in Westerly and Mystic are open for showers for Stonington residents beginning today. Residents must show identification.

Transfer station: Extended hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Normal hours resume Monday.

Garbage pickup: On schedule

Medical equipment: Police and fire departments available for charging.

The SAT scheduled for Saturday at Stonington High School have been postponed until Nov. 17. Students registered to take Saturday's test will receive an e-mail announcement from the College Board, which will include further information and instructions.

WATERFORD

Garbage: No garbage and recycling pick up for the remainder of this week. Normal collection will resume on Monday.

Transfer station: Open on Monday and will resume its normal schedule of 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Town Hall: Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., full operations.

Community Center: Open, but there are no exercise programs taking place. The computer room and the gym are open.

Showers: At the Community Center until 8 p.m. Community Center is located on 24 Rope Ferry Road. The Community Center will be open this weekend for showers and as a charging station. Hours on Saturday will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Waterford Commodities Center will be open from noon until 8 p.m. today and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Municipal Complex at 1000 Hartford Road. Food and Water is available.

DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES

All DMV offices in our region and AAA sites, which also provide DMV services, have re-opened to the public. Customers may visit http://ct.gov/dmv/offices for a complete listing of all DMV service locations.

REGIONAL: SAND REMOVAL

Property owners and municipalities can remove sand displaced from beaches onto roads, yards, parking lots, decks and other areas by Hurricane Sandy and return it to the closest beach, thanks to an emergency authorization order issued by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The authorization applies only to sand that is not contaminated and is relatively free of debris.

The normal permit requirement for sand removal and placement on beaches is being waived until April 30.

Authorization also was issued allowing property owners make emergency repairs to structures and seawalls without first obtaining coastal permits.

DRINKING WATER

Nine small drinking water systems in southeastern Connecticut are among 82 under a boil water advisory issued Wednesday by the state Department of Public Health.

Customers served by water systems experiencing power outages who do not have a backup power source should boil water, the department said.

The local systems affected by the advisory are: Kitemaug Orchard Association, Oakridge Gardens, Oakridge Village, Meadows Apartments and Fox Laurel Mobile Home Park, all in Montville; Mile Creek Apartments, Lyme Regis, and Boxwood Condominium Association, all in Old Lyme; and Crystal Lake Condominiums, in Salem.

Those under a boil water advisory should:

- Safely boil their water by bringing it to a rolling boil for one minute.

- Use boiled or bottled water when cooking, washing fruits and vegetables, brushing teeth, washing hands for cooking and making baby formula.

- Those without gas or electricity to heat water can purify water with 8 drops (¼ teaspoon) of liquid household bleach that is at least 5.25 percent hypochlorite solution per gallon of water. (Use 16 drops per gallon of water for cloudy water.) The water should be stirred and allowed to stand for at least 30 minutes before use.

APPLYING FOR FEMA AID

Residents in New London and Middlesex counties who experienced storm-related damage must register online or by phone with FEMA to access federal aid, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced today.

Online applications may be completed at www.disasterassistance.gov. To register by phone, call 1-800-621-3362.

"This declaration will bring much-needed financial assistance to residents who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy," Malloy said in a statement. "But it is critical to note that you must register with FEMA to begin the process of accessing possible federal assistance. We will continue to work to get the rest of the counties in the state declared.
