Fire extinguished at National Guard facility in Groton

UPDATED: Groton — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that broke our this morning in a boiler at the Connecticut National Guard's 1109th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group facility on Tower Avenue near Groton New London Airport.

The fire at the facility formerly known as the Aviation Classification and Repair Depot (AVCRAD) was reported about 9 a.m. and reported under control about 9:21 a.m.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is being investigated by the state fire marshall, said Capt. Jeff Douchette of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, one of several departments who responded to the incident.

“We received a box alarm for the specific building and upon investigation we discovered a fire in the boiler room,” Douchette said. “We were able to confine the damage to that room, secured the utilities and gas, and the fire was knocked down quickly with no injuries.”

Other departments responding to the scene included the City of Groton Fire Department, Old Mystic and Mystic fire departments, the Naval Submarine Base Fire Department, and the Lawrence & Memorial paramedics.
