Norwich police alert residents to planned New Year's Day cannon fire

Norwich - City police are alerting residents of a planned New Year's Day celebration Tuesday that may rattle some cupboards.

"The Emancipation Proclamation Commemoration" in the city on New Year's Day will feature a daylong series of festivities that will include a 100-gun cannon salute.

The salute will begin at 1:10 p.m. at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park and will consist of about 35 minutes of continuous cannon fire.

This cannon fire is anticipated to be loud, and may be heard outside of downtown, reaching into neighboring communities. Residents should not be alarmed if they hear the cannon fire within the designated time frame.
