Walk scheduled for wildlife preserve in Stonington

Stonington — The Stonington Land Trust will offer a tour of the 82-acre Thomas Miner Wildlife Preserve on Taugwonk Road, which it bought in October from Pfizer, on Jan. 6 at 1 p.m.

The tour will be led by local naturalist Bob Dewire. The property is located along the east side of Taugwonk Road, about a mile north of the Interstate 95 and is marked by a sign and balloons.

With funding from an anonymous donor, the land trust purchased the property from Pfizer for $325,000. Pfizer used the property to grow vegetables using various fertilizers in the 1970s.

The property is named in honor of one of the town’s first residents, whose descendants owned the property in the 1700s. It contains 25 acres of hay fields along with a wooded area to the rear. There is also small barn on the property, which also is part of the Stony Brook watershed.
