Norwich – In 1866, Norwich resident George W. Smith took on a gruesome task of traveling to the infamous Civil War prison in Andersonville, Ga., to search for the bodies of Norwich soldiers who had died and were buried there.

On Feb. 4, Rick Kane, a member of the New London County Civil War Roundtable, will present his research into Smith’s efforts to locate and bring home the bodies of Norwich soldiers from Andersonville during the group’s monthly meeting at Norwich Free Academy.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sidney Frank Center at NFA and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Kane will describe how in January of 1866, Smith began his unusual quest by traveling to Andersonville Prison and bringing back the remains of all the Norwich men he could find. Kane said Smith returned with nine men to be re-buried in Norwich.
