Man with rebar arrested in NL home invasion

New London— Police charged a man with home invasion early Saturday night after the say he forced his way in to a Garfield Avenue apartment wielding a piece of metal rebar.

Hector Ortega, 30, of no certain address, was also charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal mischief after the 6:49 p.m. incident at 49 Garfield Ave. He is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court.

Police said they received a 911 call and when they arrived they found Ortega leaving the apartment. He was arrested without incident.

Police said Ortega, who has a hat pulled down over his face in an apparent attempt to conceal his identity, knocked on the door of the first floor unit. He forced his way inside when one of the residents answered the door. One of the residents suffered minor injures in a scuffle that ensued.
