Norwich rowing club seeks members, instructors

Norwich -- As an introduction to the 2013 rowing season, the Chelsea Boat Club and the Norwich Recreation Department will host an open house March 23 for anyone interested in joining the rowing club or to learn more about the program.

The open house will be held at 10 a.m. March 23 at the Norwich Recreation Department office, 75 Mohegan Road. Some of the boats will be on display and Chelsea Boat Club members will be available to answer questions.

The club is interested in attracting both experienced rowers and those interested in learning to row.

The Chelsea Boat Club will start its sixth consecutive year of operation at the Marina at American Wharf in downtown Norwich during the week of April 8. April and May will be limited to experienced adult rowers and Norwich Free Academy crews.

The club is actively recruiting experienced rowers and coxswains during this period, especially those interested in coaching. Interested parties should call Pat Fuery at (860) 887-6758 for information.

During its summer program beginning June 3, the club will focus on recruiting adult rowers.  Instruction will take place twice weekly during scheduled adult evening rows.  Rowers have access to eight Vespoli four-oared racing shells, three recreational single sculls and a recreational double scull.

Experienced and qualified novice adult rowers are encouraged to organize their own crews to row at any time on their own schedule.

Contact the Recreation Department at (860) 823-3791 for more information.
