Stonington — Superintendent of Schools Van Riley outlined a number of ways Thursday that the school system can cut its proposed 2013-14 budget by $150,000 without directly affecting programs and employees.

Board of Education Chairwoman Gail MacDonald said purchasing supplies in the current budget and savings from unexpected retirements are among the ways the school system plans to account for the Board of Finance's decision to cut $150,000 from its $977,000 increase.

But MacDonald warned that if voters reject the budget at the April 29 referendum, the finance board would cut the budget even more and that will likely result in larger class sizes, layoffs and cuts to extracurricular activities among others.
