COG seeks funds for improvements to Route 82
Norwich — The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments is recommending funding for safety and traffic improvements to part of Salem Turnpike (Route 82).
The project, estimated at about $3.9 million, would widen Route 82 between Surrey Lane and New London Turnpike as well as "re-align" an offset intersection incorporating the driveway of the Staples plaza and Surrey Lane, according to an application prepared by the city.
"It's a substantial project which has regional significance," said Executive Director James Butler at Wednesday's SCCOG meeting.
The council approved submitting a proposal for the first phase of the project to the Department of Transportation for future funding consideration under the Surface Transportation Program-Urban grants. The grant could fund 80 percent of the cost.
Assistant Director Richard Guggenheim said the traffic area has experienced a high number of accidents. He said there is the possibility that the state DOT would contribute additional funding.
