Stonington school board to review GPA requirement for extracurriculars

The Board of Education’s Policy Committee reached an agreement Thursday on a provision that would require students to have at least a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.

Two weeks ago, the committee approved a proposal by the District Athletic Committee that now requires student athletes to have a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in games.

The committee’s recommendation for extracurricular activities such as band, drama and clubs now goes to the school board for review and approval.

If approved, the change would take effect following the first marking period this fall. In future years, spring grades would affect participation the following fall.

The school board would receive periodic reports about how the change is affecting students. Those students who do not have 2.0 GPA would be assisted by coaches, teachers, tutors and parents to raise their grades.
