East Lyme — The Zoning Commission reached a consensus Thursday against a revised affordable housing application for a light-industrial zone by West Main Street and Capital Drive.

The commission directed the town attorney to draft a resolution to deny the application because of public health and safety concerns, as well as an exemption for industrial zones in state affordable housing law. The commission is expected to make a final decision and vote on the application at its meeting Thursday.

In March, the commission rejected the original application from JAG Capital Drive LLC to build 69 affordable housing units in a light-industrial area about a half-mile from the Rocky Neck Connector.

Earlier this month, the developers presented a revised application that included nine fewer units, additional landscaping and at least 50-foot buffer zones between the development and the industrial park.

Citing public hearing testimony from business owners in the industrial park, the commission members discussed at a special meeting Thursday that concerns about public health and safety remained, especially due to the chemicals used in the light-industrial zone. They further addressed a limited availability of industrial land in town.
