New London City Council approves $75,000 for 'quality of life' NLHS fixes

New London — When high school students leave for summer vacation in less than two weeks, local contracting companies will be hard at work making what the City Council president called Tuesday as "quality of life" repairs.

Members of the City Council on Monday appropriated $75,000 from the Public Works budget to address deferred maintenance projects at the high school that includes fixing bathroom stall doors, locker room doors and painting.

"This is a major push to take care of as much of the deferred maintenance as we can. The place is a disgrace and it's all maintenance issues," Council President Michael Passero said. "The city's staff hasn't been able to take care of all of that because we've been understaffed."

The council also approved that a representative from the Capitol Region Education Council outline the work needed in each classroom and the building.

CREC representative Diana McNeill will categorize the work needed in the school and assign a projected cost before the work begins, Passero said. He said she is working with the school's head custodian to identify areas within the building that need the most attention first with priority given to minor Americans with Disabilities Act issues within the school.

"We don't know how far that money will go," Passero said. "We're hoping they'll (CREC) be able to say we can get it all done."
