Suicide prevention event to be held in Norwich Saturday

Norwich – A suicide prevention awareness event featuring service providers, local vendors, a fundraiser walk, raffles and a memorial wall will be held Saturday at Fontaine Field track on Mahan Drive across from Kelly Middle School.

The event, to be held rain or shine from noon to 3 p.m., is sponsored by the Norwich Prevention Council, and all proceeds will be used for local efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

The Norwich Prevention Council is a group of local collaborators who work together to prevent risky behavior among Norwich youth.

The collaboration includes Norwich Youth and Family Services, Norwich Free Academy, Norwich Public Schools, Norwich Police, Otis Library, BullyBusters, Uncas Health District, United Community and Family Services and NFA Students Against Destructive Decisions.

The group recently installed a prescription drug drop box at the Norwich Police Department and last year worked with local liquor stores on a "Sticker Shock" event designed to educate the public about the risks of buying alcohol for minors.

The group receives funding from the Southeastern Regional Action Council.
