NPU issues power alert for Norwich customers

Norwich - Norwich Public Utilities has issued a power alert to all its customers for today and Wednesday.

Customers are asked to take necessary action to decrease use of electricity. Customers can reduce electric usage without affecting their quality of living by limiting their use of washers, dryers, stoves and by turning off unnecessary lights during the peak period of the power alert.

“Electricity is a commodity that is bought and sold on the open market, and costs are determined by the amount of electricity that is bought,” NPU General Manager John Bilda said. “When a tremendous amount of electricity is being used, the price increases exponentially. We are then charged this higher price for the following year.”

Lowering electricity demand during power alert days can lower next year’s wholesale energy cost, Bilda said.
