North Stonington misses out on economic assistant grant

North Stonington – The town was passed over for a Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant from the state, according to a press release from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

North Stonington applied last year for $160,000 in grant money from the program to do an engineering feasibility study on a possible sewer system partnership with neighbor Stonington. There is no public sewer system in town currently, which presents an obstacle for sorely needed economic development.

The project as it was planned would have brought sewer service up Route 2 to the rotary.

“I’m very disappointed,” First Selectman Nicholas Mullane said. "It was a town-town type of a win-win situation. It was a true economic development grant, and I’m sorry that we weren’t awarded it.”
